Self.com, the online destination of Self magazine (which specializes in health, fitness, nutrition, beauty and happiness), enlisted us as true design partner over a period of 2+ years as they sought to revamp the magazine’s web and mobile presence. We worked closely together to rethink their overall usability, UI, and visual look over during this time by designing and developed pages, promotions, applications that allowed users to easily access Self’s extensive database of effective workouts and healthy recipes. Our mission together was to achieve the distinct goal of making the website an on-going resource for Self’s readers to engage and maintain their healthy lifestyles.
Our Process: Discover, Empower, Engage
From 2011-2013, we worked on a consistent basis with the Self Digital team on a multitude of design and development projects. From marrying online conventions with SELF’s editorial magazine style, designing promotions and applications across a variety of platforms, and developing within their proprietary systems, we executed at a high-level for this world-famous brand.
Here are some notable projects:
SELF DIET TAPPER – Looking to reach dieters on their mobile phones, we worked closely with Self.com to design and develop the SELF Diet Tapper. As the first ever consumer-based, text-based diet, the Diet Tapper allows users to get all the support and guidance they need to adhere to this daily weight-loss plan, right on their phones. We designed the Diet Tapper experience to be consistent from the browser to mobile, where it is simultaneously available. While this important consideration slightly limited the amount of complex visual design we could propose, we made up for it with a simple, intuitive interface that could expand as SELF’s Diet Tapper content grew. Note: The Self Diet Tapper mobile app is no live.
SELF FITNESS AND DIET LOGS – Self’s Logs, used by users to track their health and fitness goals, were sorely acking SELF’s branding and losing traffic due to an underwhelming visual look and confusing interface. We stepped in to create a more visually-pleasing design, as well as rethinking much of the user experience, and give the Logs a much needed update.
SELF’S CHALLENGE PROGRAMS – Self’s Challenge programs, launched every few months in the magazine and online, were wildly popular ways to inspire their followers to attain healthy goals through diets and fitness. We spearheaded the implementation of these programs on Self.com, designing interactive portals to promote the challenges, promotional emails to boost sign-ups, and mobile versions of all pages to reach a wider audience. Our work for Self’s Drop 10 Challenge 2012 won a MIN Online “Best of the Web 2012″ award.
